A rare mosquito-borne virus has infected numerous people and led to 9 deaths in the past months.
The “eastern equine encephalitis” or EEE is a fatal disease carried by mosquitoes from birds to humans and other animals it feeds on. At least 29 cases of the disease have been recorded from seven states, namely: Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Connecticut, North Carolina, and Tennessee. An estimated 30 percent of those who contract EEE die, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), meanwhile, those who survive it suffer from chronic neurological complications.
The sickness may not frequently occur among people, but it can cause brain infections that are often lethal to the victim.
The CDC reports that a person will show signs of the EEE illness usually 4 to 10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.
The EEE may produce the following symptoms: a fever, headache, irritability, restlessness, drowsiness, anorexia, vomiting, and diarrhea. The CDC along with other providers of pharmaceutical services in New Jersey outlines that the symptoms may last one to two weeks.
“We don’t expect this to be an epidemic, but the higher than usual number of cases and the severity of the virus has raised public concern,” says William Schaffner, MD, an infectious disease specialist and a professor of preventive medicine and health policy at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee.
